[S1E27] LUA EXTERNAL MODULES TIC TAC TOE [Lesson 17] // In This Video, LUA EXTERNAL MODULES: Learn how to create, access and use them as your own library of tools! As your app development career grows, you will find that you have need to access the same tools and resources you've previously published in past app projects. You will get used to having programmed things in a particular way. So it's handy to build your own library of functions, variables and other tools and resources you want to use in a variety of projects. The other powerful advantage of using a module file that is external to your main gameplay files is that if you have an app/game that has multiple levels and each level needs to perform the same action (like play a success chime when the level is completed) it's useful to write the code in just one location and all multiple .lua files then to access and use that one piece of code. When you need to update or amend you only have one location to work with and not repeated identical amendments to make. We take a quick look at the difference between a sound and a stream (which is used for background music), we discuss when to use channels and not. We discuss the audio file types and that some editing of the sound effect may be needed to trim away (top/tail) any dead space at the start and end of the file to ensure it has a rapid play effect. We then discuss the management logistics of building apps and the players need to "mute" sound effects and that we will continue this journey in our next video, whereby we will look at writing our code in our own module library and including that file in any scene we want to access it, so we have the code written once and used multiple times. [S1E25] How to RUN a LIVE BUILD TEST of your APP using SOLAR2D Running simulations of your app in the Corona/Solar2D Simulator and Console is fine during the design phase, but once you get close to wanting to publish your app, you need to migrate to a live build test environment. To do this, you need to ensure you are running the very latest versions of both Solar2D and your Java SDK developer kit. This allows you to build out your project, export it to an external device (in this video example I use my daughters Kindle Fire) and then using your home/office wifi you can do updates and amendments on your pc, inside the Solar2D Simulator that will dynamically update your app. Perfect for running real test scenarios. AND how this hidden problem only surfaces as a result of NOT managing your scenes remove/destroy process the correct way. This can result in many instances of the same .lua file being called, but the new instance is trying to load whilst the old instance is still being removed, and as both instances have the same file name the composer closes the all instances when it should not. To resolve this issue, the need to transverse momentarily to a third scene, a cutscene is a simple clean way to allow old scenes to completely be destory in memory, before a news instance gets created!
